Areas of practice are focused on trauma, ABUSE, anxiety and depression. The approach applied in counselling is somatic, person-centred, attachment-based, trauma-informed and strength-based. Using a holistic perspective, counselling will embrace your mental, emotional, spiritual, behavioural, and physical wellness.

 

TRAUMA

Trauma can result from abuse, assault, accident, crime, uexpected loss or any event that has a long lasting impact on an individual’s emotional, mental, physical and spiritual well being. No matter how your trauma occurred, it is life changing. Some impacts of trauma you experience can include depression, anxiety, suicidal thoughts, and attachment issues. Using a trauma-imformed approach, counselling is tailored to your unique experience of trauma and addresses the impacts trauma has had on you. Counselling will provide a safe and trusting space for you to understand your trauma experience and process your emotions. EMDR can also be used to treat your trauma. Coping skills are an important part of counselling to help you with the emotional, behavioural, psychological effects of trauma. Counselling will help with feeling more like yourself again or finding your true self outside of your trauma experience.

DEPRESSION

Depression can happen to anyone at any time in life. It’s different than moments of feeling sad, it’s chronic and can range from a constant low mood or inability to get out of bed. Depression makes it difficult for you to enjoy life and feel good about yourself. Activities you once enjoyed no longer bring you joy. You have a difficult time finding the energy or desire to want to get up and on with your day. It’s difficult to concentrate and you’re forgetful as you feel you’re in a fog that won’t lift. Your self-esteem, self-worth and confidence are low. Depression affects your relationships, job, school, and health. Counselling with the use of CBT, EMDR, coping skills, improving relationships, solution-focused and developing strengths are some methods for treating depression and is tailored to suit each your needs and goals.

ANXIETY

Anxiety can affect an you negatively when it is persistent, intense and occurs more often than usual. Anxiety causes you to experience a racing heart, nausea, heavy breathing, or trembling each time there is a perceived threat or harm. This is a frustrating and difficult process to frequently experience. Anxiety prevents you from fully participating and enjoying your life. Whether your anxiety is due trauma, abuse, accident, fears, or social factors counselling can help with understanding your anxiety and develope tools to gain more control over your anxiety. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), EMDR, Mindfulness, coping skills, or stress management are some methods used in counselling to help you with anxiety. Counselling for anxiety is tailored to address your specific needs and goals.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of therapy that has been effective in treating and helping people heal from trauma and other mental health problems. EMDR is a step-by-step process that prepares you to be able to process the traumatic experience in a safe environment. The counsellor uses a hand movement, like a pendulum, that you follow with your eyes. Your memories, emotions, and thoughts are processed through this movement. EMDR helps you fully process a traumatic experience and sort out the emotions attached to that experience. Your negative thoughts and feelings associated with the traumatic experience is replaced with positive thoughts and emotions. EMDR addresses the emotional, cognitive and physical effects of trauma which will help you become better able to function and cope.
